Carriage House Progress

The Carriage House will be a barn located on the road up to the Main House. Anyone going to or from the Main House will have to make a 180 degree turn around the Carriage House, making it a natural place for a caretaker to observe comings and goings. Until the Main House is finished, we will live in the Carriage House (starting about July, 2004).

The Carriage House downstairs has parking for three large vehicles, the Mechanical Room (furnace, water heater, etc.), a Mud Room 3/4 bath, and a large closet. The upstairs is a two bedroom, one bath apartment (about 1160 sq ft).

The exterior will be finished with 1x8 reclaimed planks mounted vertically and will have a "skirt" of rusty corrugated metal. The gambrel roof will be covered with standing seam metal sheets (the same as we plan to use on the Main House). This all should help give it the appearance of being an old barn that has been renovated. The overall dimensions are 28 feet wide by 44 feet long by about 28 feet high.

We used snow shoes to get up to the site in February. Contractor Kevin Click took some measurements.

Kevin Click and Engineer Dave Crawford at the site in April. To correlate many of the pictures in this series, look at the Aspen trees on the sides of the road in the background.

The road was not quite roughed in and a little of the site regraded when Gary got snowed on in May. Many Aspens right of the old road were removed, revealing more of the Douglas Firs behind.

The footings for the foundation were poured and the well was being drilled while Gary attended forestry classes in July.

The foundation was in place and the bottom floor slab poured while Arthur and Gary were visiting in August.

Further regrading was underway as Arthur and Gary left for home in August.

Framing of the lower floor was well underway by the end of August.

Second floor plywood sheets going up, September 10. The sheets overlap the first and second floor walls.

Note that the bottom floor is strapped and bolted to the foundation. When the 1x8 exterior planks are added, it will be very solid!

October 8: excavating for 1,000 gallon propane tank.

More tar paper and the skirt is on. It will be treated to accelerate the rust.

October 11: The 1x8s start to go up. Another layer will cover the gaps to make a "board and batten" finish.

The drab, weathered effect is beginning to become apparent. Click here for a view of the Main House site.

October 23: The metal roof is on and the board and batten is finished on this end. Pretty drab, eh?

Board and batten partly done, but a better view of the roof.

November 7: The exterior is pretty much finished, except for some lights. The garage doors are made to look like barn doors.

November 4: It snowed! See the November progress report for more.

November 21: not much happening outside. Forms are in place for an "apron" outside the garage door.

Note the trench going back into the hillside. Click here to see the septic system and an interior shot.
