05 Sep 2006 – WNW Pauline contemplates the beam that will support floor joists. The sun is still well above the horizon, but smoke from forest fires makes it look like sunset. |
05 Sep 2006 – ESE The beam to support floor joists runs down the center of the East end of the house. The 1,000 gallon water tank can be seen in the 2nd Mechanical Room. The pipes to the left of the tank are for phone, TV and networking (they go all the way to the Carriage House). The blue pipes coming out of the gravel are for water from the well. |
06 Sep 2006 – E The first I-beam to support the concrete roof above the Mud Room has been welded to the remains of the old beam. One more to go. See the monthly report to see more of how this was done, and check out the link to the movie of the old roof being removed. The wind is not pushing much smoke our way today. |

06 Sep 2006 – W The beams are welded together and then plates are welded on each side. The result should be stronger than the original beam. |
07 Sep 2006 – NE The initial floor joists go into the East end of the house. Another smoky day. |
08 Sep 2006 – S Four steel beams rise vertically into what will be the upper floor. These are needed for earthquake codes. They will be "wrapped" to look like timber posts. |
|
11 Sep 2006 – SE A crystal clear day! The wind has shifted. But that cloud over the mountains is actually smoke from a forest fire. |
16 Sep 2006 – SE We finally got some good rain and snow. It's not enough to put the fires out, but they should be controlled fires for the remainder of the season. |
18 Sep 2006 – NW The first load of timbers arrives. These are used in the lower floor structure. |
